     Summary

This book is intended for use by those who have a basic knowledge of insurance. It is not a primer. The discussions of ocean marine insurance practices cover the principles. No attempt is made to describe all of the many remifications of international trade or the marine practices that differ from country to country. The reader who has occasion to delve further into world trade and the application of ocean marine insurance to cargoes and vessels on the high seas will find many books on these subjects. The English textbooks must not be overlooked. They are written primarily with attention to the English marine practices, but these practices are dominant in many parts on the world. The discussions of inland marine insurance are presented in more detail because there is no other full presentation of this topic. The unique position of inland marine insurance in the United States apparently has made the writers from other nations reluctant to devote time to this peculiarly American phenomenon. Throughout this book there are frequent comparisons of marine practices with those of other insurance fields. The author feels that the best understanding of marine insurance can be had by an understanding the similarities and differences between this field and other insurance.
