This book presents a comprehensive description of the inland marine and transportation insurance coverages which are available to insure property being transported by railroad, motor truck and airplane, and of the methods used by insurance companies for underwriting these coverages.
The first part of the book is devoted to an explanation of the back-ground of inland marine insurance and an analysis of the many features that have been borrowed by inland marine underwriters from the fire, casualty, and ocean marine insurance fields. The principal parts of the book are devoted to a comprehensive discussion of the problems facing the underwriter in providing inland marine coverage to policy-holders. Coverages are grouped according to the needs of policyholders and the types of insurance protection afforded. Each coverage is described in detail, differences between coverages are pointed out, rates and rating methods are discussed, the peculiarities of each kind of property are explained, and underwriting principles for each coverage are given. The last part of the book is devoted to related problems such as loss adjustments, reinsurance, and the regulation of insurance rates.
