     Summary

The book is divided into seven parts. Part I, Historical Perspectives, provides a background of the evolution of the evolution of insurance from its beginning to the present. Part II, Legal Perspectives, discusses the nature and scope of insurance law, examines torts, agency and contracts, and explores the role and power of the insurance commissioner. Four chapters are devoted to the analysis of the most popular forms of life, health, property and liability insurance policies. Part III, Psychological Perspectives, deals with anxiety, risk and insurance. Gambling behavior is contrasted with insurance in the context of the literature of psychoanalytic theory. Part IV, Economic Perspectives, is an economic analysis of insurance, including its structure, competitive nature, and its role in the world economy. Part V, Actuarial Perspectives, treats the subjects of life insurance and property and liability rate-making in a non-mathematical fashion. One chapter is devoted to contemporary actuarial developments. Part Vi, managerial Perspectives, surveys the problems of insurance company management and provides techniques for measuring the performance of insurance companies. Finally, Part VII, Consumerist Perspectives, deals with social insurance, risk management, estate planning, and the consumerist movement in insurance.
