The General Statutes of Norwegian Marine Insurance were first issued in October 1871. The committee was formed to make revisions in the statute in 1878. In 1881 the committee submitted the draft revisions. After repeated demands for further revisions of the general statutes, a special committee was appointed in 1905. The committee submitted the draft in 1907. In March 1929, the committee issued a provisional draft for new General Statues of Marine Insurance.
In the new General Statues the arrangement of the contents has, to a large extent, been altered and the old provisions re-drafted so as to conform to present time usage. The provisions in force have also been subjected to numerous alterations, having regard to the new legal rules concerning the liability of owners and the legislative bill on insurance contracts. The General Statues came into force on 1st January 1931.
