Dadasaheb Phalke was obsessed with the idea of making the Indian Cinema industry indigenous, when he was already past forty and poverty-stricken. In order to produce movies with a specific ideal, he exerted himself, fought against adverse circumstances and put his family life on the line. yet this disregarded the Father of Indian Cinema died in penury. The Govt of India, however, appreciated his monumental work and instituted an award in his name - Phalke Puraskar - from the centenary year of his birth (1970) to ne presented to an artist who makes an extensive and notable contribution to the world of Indian Cinema. It is deemed to be the supreme honour in the world of cinema in India.
