The book is set in the backdrop of the current decade. This renders the present work vitally relevant today. The present decade is not only marked by contradictions, it is also reflective of the benchmarks touched upon by Indian democracy. India has celebrated her post-sixtieth independence and republic days with exuberance and great vigour and has also stabilized itself in the face of financial reforms introduced a decade ago and the subsequent forces of globalization unleashing on her shores. Thus, India has showcased itself as not only an evolved democratic polity but also an equally matured economy. On the one hand there is an intense support no Nehru’s passionate implementation of ethics and morality in India’s policy-making and on the other there lies a tussle and a half-hearted consensus in letting them go under the pressure of a changing world order. Whatever be the nature of engagement with Nehru’s legacy in India’s foreign policy-making-as an urge to usher it into the future unaltered or as a critical engagement advocating a marked shift-that distinct Nehruvain flavour to India’s foreign policy is retained. And it is perhaps this itself that helps us confront adverse international political situations.
