     Summary

C.E Goldings’s “ The Law and Practice of Reinsurance”, first published in 1937, showed that it was possible to describe the fundamental theory of reinsurance concisely and with practical relevance and thus to provide the reinsurer with a most valuable tool for his day-to-day work. Golding’s readers demonstrated their gratitude over the years. The book was reprinted several times and served as an example for a number of others. No author of the younger generation could ignore the views expressed in the Golding “classic”. On the contrary, anyone who was able o quote Golding in support of his arguments was always sure of gaining wide acceptance for them throughout the reinsurance world. And this has remained so to the present day. It is therefore scarcely a coincidence that Golding’s standard work should be reissued just now, after a gap of many years. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. K.V. Louw for undertaking this task as editors and for updating the text wherever it seemed necessary without touching the substance of it, which remains and will continue to remain valid beyond all short- lived developments.
