     Summary

In this book author will examine, first, agreements that relate to the storage and through putting of fuels at depots and terminals, secondly, agreements for the transportation of those fuels, and thirdly, agreements for the provision of fuel supply, consultancy, and agency services. The purpose is thus in essence to explore the legal relationships between an oil or fuel sales company and its service providers. The products themselves may range from fuel oils, at the heavier end of the barrel, to marine distillates such as diesel oil and gas oil, through to the lighter oils, condensates like propane’s and butanes, and industrial, automotive and marine lubricants and greases. The discussion focuses in particular on marine fuels and marine terminals, and primarily on fuels for marine, commercial or industrial markets, for example, the bunkering of vessels or supply of fuels to power stations. However, most of the terms of the agreements that we will examine are equally applicable to products for supply of fuels or lubricants to inland commercial or domestic customers, and even the handling of crude oil. The underlying principles to be applied to the agreements to be discussed (though contracts of affreightment by definition only have marine application) are equally as relevant to inland storage depots as they are to marine terminals.
