     Summary

Health care facilities and services are essential for creating health citizens and society that can effectively contribute to social and economic development. In India health care facilities are provided through the public sector, private sector, public – private partnership and NGOs. Primary health care services are provided in rural areas, secondary health care services are provided in towns and tertiary health care services are available in cities. Most of the government operated rural health sub-centres and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) are inefficient due to inadequate facilities. In majority of public health centres absenteeism is reportedly high. Temporal changes are computed for input-output mix of health care systems measured in terms of doctor – patient ratio, bed-patient ratio and health care expenditure per patient. These results of health input – output mix in private health care system is increasing at a relatively greater rate than public health care systems. Among the demographic, economic and health variables, community, family size, child-adult ratio, household income and type of health disorder have significant effects on the choice of health care systems and health care expenditure. The users of primary health centre say that they choose PHC as it is closer to residence and the services are reliable.
