     Summary

This book contains a summary of the analysis in our longer book, reforming pensions: principles and policy choices (2008). When selecting the material for this version, we could not resist making alterations when we found something we wanted to say differently, so the books do contain a few differences. The full table of contents of that book appears at the end of this one. As a summary, this book no longer cites the sources for much of our cited evidence and analyses. The book project is the result of two pieces of luck. The first came about when we were asked to participate in a group invited to advise the government of china on pension reform; the group presented its core recommendations to premier Wen Jiabao in November 2004. The second was the opportunity that one of us had to participate in reforms of the pension system in Chile, including discussions with the presidential advisory council in May 2006.
