     Summary

This book is consumer oriented, and emphasizes the coverages available to individuals. In the age of specialization and the organization man, few students will become small shopkeepers or entrepreneurs and not many will have to deal with the complex insurance programs needed by large corporations, but all will have to plan their own personal insurance programs, and all should understand the basic nature of risk and the function of insurance in our economy. To make it possible to cover the material in a one semester course, it was necessary to omit many details concerning insurance policies and practices used in the insurance of more complex business risk. Some of the more recondite branches of insurance, such as ocean marine and the fire allied lines have also been treated rather briefly. The complexities and special nature of many of many of these coverages make it advisable that they be covered in a second course. Hence this book concentrates on the types of insurance the individual consumer will have to buy for himself, and most illustrations of insurance policies and practices are drawn from this sphere. The student who learns the fundamentals thoroughly should have no difficulty broadening his knowledge to include more advance topics.
