Summary |
The present study on the L.I.C. is therefore, an integral part of the Institute’s programmed to study, in some depth, the functioning of financial intermediaries in the money and capital markets. Professor Rao’s study brings in one place, a mass of data on the L.I.C.
The study brings out clearly that the L.I.C’s overall performance has been good but that it could be and ought to be much better. The life insurance habit has yet to spread in a big way in the country as a whole, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas and among relatively low income groups. The question is whether a single institutional agency like the L.I.C can do a very good job or whether the time is ripe for having 4-5 regional corporations. Professor Rao has expressed himself in favour of the latter and he has my strong support.
