     Summary

This study has been divided into four Parts. Part I is introductory: it discusses the nature and scope of social security and throws light on its insurance contents, viz., life and social insurance. Part II includes Chapters 2 to 10, and deals with life insurance in India. The social insurance system of this country forms the subject-matter of Part III which is comprised of Chapters 11 to 18. Finally, there is a concluding chapter which constitutes Part IV. This study makes an intensive study of the private ownership phase of life insurance enterprise in India extending over a period of 42 years (1914-1955) for which statistics are available, and compares its working during this period with its working as a nationalised enterprise since 1956. It also includes comprehensive study of the social insurance movement in India, with special emphasis on the working of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation during the period 1948-1959.
