This volume contains four pieces which put forward alternative concepts or programmes of various kinds. The only thing common between them is that they all think of an alternative or alternatives to the existing system although they do not necessarily agree between themselves. Their main objective is to stimulate further thought rather than to describe concrete solutions. Another volume of the same kind is being published in collaboration with the Indian council of medical research. It deals with papers presented on alternatives in health care at an ICMR-ICSSR-sponsored seminar at Hyderabad and its recommendations.
