In recent years concern for development of human resources in organisaions has increased for two compelling business reasons. One, involvement of employees is essential for improving the quality of the product and the reduction in cost. These considerations are necessary for an organization to survive in a competitive market situation. Two upgradation of technology needs continuous improvement in skills of people and this aspect again requires voluntary cooperation of employees. In India some organizations have succeeded in their HRD initiatives, and some have derived limited, if any, benefit from such initiatives. Five well recognized researchers in the area of human development have studied in detail how organizations that are recognized and rewarded for their HRD initiative have succeeded. How do they conceptualise HRD, how do they operationalise ideas into policy, programmes and practices, how do they assess and develop initiatives and how do their employees react to their HRD approaches. The book contains detailed case studies of five organizations and generalizations from these cases that could be useful for other organizations which feel the need to take HRD initiatives, or review their programmes.
