     Summary

This book is about handling these and many other situations in a way that is mutually acceptable to all parties concerned. From our own personal experiences and from working with managers we have concluded that this usually means behaving assertively, as opposed to nanassertively or aggressively. So the book focuses on the behavior you can use when handling various situations. The world ‘behaviour’ can be used to refer to a whole range of observable activities in which people engage. But we mostly use it in a particular way-to refer to the things you do and say when you are communicating with other people. The book also looks at what lies behind the behaviour, not in terms of general aspects of personality, but in terms of the specific beliefs, thoughts and feelings you may have that affect the behaviour you use. We concentrate on behaviour, beliefs, thoughts and feelings because, as we hope to demonstrate in the book, they can be changed!
