This new book places its emphasis on performance-and in every sense of that world. Performance, literally, encompasses accomplishment, implementation, and efficiency. The student who has acquired in basic courses an understanding of the essential ingredients of supervision must be prepared to implement that knowledge, to move from comprehension to accomplishment-and in so doing, to achieve efficiency at the supervisory task. This text helps the student attain these objectives by concentrating on those performance factors which are most common to supervisory management-regardless of the kind of enterprise in which it takes place. This new text directs the student’s attention to these performance factors in the same manner and intensity with which the supervisor encounters them in job situations. It does so not only in the textbook but also by means of the accompanying Performance Portfolio. This “hands on” component of the program provides the student with the opportunity to try out new tools and techniques and to build confidence in applying them in simulated, but realistic, supervisory situations.
