     Summary

This book of readings contains research studies and conceptual articles concerning the way people behave in organizations-many kinds of organizations of an industrial nature. It is intended for use as either basic or supplementary reading in courses in administration or management, organizational behavior, industrial engineering, or industrial-social psychology. The readings selected are not intended to represent the entire field of organizational behavior but they do give an indication of the kind of research approaches that have been used. Few, if any, of the articles are of the “how-to-do-it” variety, since the rather rapid accumulation of knowledge about the way people behave in organizational contexts allows us to probe more deeply than current feds and practices. The concern of most of the authors of the papers has been to present the results of their observations and studies; the practical implications for management, when the author decides to include any, usually are quite brief. However, and understanding of each author’s paper cannot fail to give the reader notions of how to apply the research results.
