This is a book about management, managers, and the organizations they manage. Perhaps the most critical problem for this era-and for the future-is how to manage and operate complex organizations, and our book focuses on this critical issue. Efficient and productive organizations utilize manpower and scarce resources well, and they have contributed much to our own high living standards and the quality of our lives. Yet for too often organizations of all types perform very poorly indeed. Examples of inefficiency and poor performance appear to be more numerous than examples of efficiency and good performance. We often know what can or might be done, but the average business firm or other productive organization falls far short of what could or should be done.
