The first part of the text lists a selection of abbreviations which a practitioner might encounter, offering an interpretation for each abbreviation. As a further guide many of the definitions are qualified to indicate their use in practice. However, it will be noted that in some cases alternative meanings are offered. Where the alternative is not qualified to indicate its use in practice one should select the definition which appears to be most suitable in context with the subject matter concerned. In cases of doubt the practitioner is advised to seek clarification from the originator of the message containing the abbreviation. Clause reference numbers are also shown where appropriate; with a preamble to Part One to indicate the use of these references.
The second part of the text is for the benefit of those seeking an acceptable abbreviation for a particular term. It provides a list of marine insurance and reinsurance terms with abbreviations that should be readily recognisable to other practitioners.
