One of the features of this work is that it attempts to place MBO in an integrated framework along with several other existing management approaches and functions, for example, performance appraisal, corporate planning, budgetary control, organizational development and so on. Unless the differentiation and, later on, integration, of MBO with these components of enterprise management are consciously done right from the start, we feel much of the clarity and sharpness of MBO may be lost. MBO will have to clearly mark out for itself its specific contribution. In doing so, it has to learn what kind of help it will seek from other on going processes and techniques. It has also to show how other processes and techniques will, in their turn, be helped by MBO. This is the kind of totality in MBO we have tried to impress upon throughout this work. From this angle the book reveals an eclectic imprint which is justified.
