     Summary

There is no precise definition of small fire surveys. They may, however, be taken to relate to the many risks proposed for fire insurance which do not present any of the complicated hazards of the large industrial undertakings. At the same time, they necessitate inspections so that the business may be correctly underwritten. This is essential at a time when fire insurance is passing through a difficult period. It follows that this book has not been planned to cover in detail the more intricate trade risks, which have to be dealt with by the highly-qualified fire insurance surveyor. Although the book is not intended for the full-time surveyor, what is said should be of help to the newcomer in the field of fire insurance surveying. The main object of the present work is to provide a guide to those who are called upon from time to time to carry out inspections of certain buildings where it would not be economic to instruct a fire surveyor to make a special visit. The new business inspector, for instance, may be already on the scene and he must be able to give the fire underwriter sufficient information to enable him correctly to assess and rate the risk. This saves both time and money and thus reduces overheads.
