Summary |
Although the history of the profession may be said to have begun after the Great Fire of London with the introduction of the insurance on buildings, independent loss adjusters have not at present been indentified at any earlier date than 1790.
The formation of the Fire Officers’ Committee led to the compilation of a list of approved valuers and assessors (as adjusters were the called), thus recognizing the custom of employing independent fir loss adjusters: many who were named had earlier origins and their successors continue as members of the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters.
This professional body was brought into being only in consequence of the widespread damage in the United Kingdom by enemy action in 1940 but the complexities of claims in the post-war world, and their vastly increased number, particularly in the accident, liability and consequential loss fields would inevitably have made such a professional association essential.
