Education has a crucial role in the growth and development of a region/country. Higher growth certainly enhances the level of education. Economists and thinkers from ancient time to present day have tried their best to establish a correlation between education and growth. Numerous researches on this subject in India and elsewhere, have established that investment in education has resulted into higher growth rate of national income, higher level of standard of living, rise in the income of labourers and farmers, removal of poverty, decline in fertility rate, better health status and in longevity of life.
Indian economic association, keeping in view the importance of education of nation-building. Declared “education, growth and development” as one of the themes for deliberations during its 91st annual conference held at M.S. University, Udaipur (Rajasthan) under the chairmanship of prof. G.K. Chadha, during 27th-29th dec. 2008. Out of several scholarly papers submitted and discussed on this theme during the conference, 29 papers have been selected and included in this volume.
