This book is primarily designed to help those involved in the production and supply of goods to understand the ramifications of the Consumer Protection Act 1987. It should also the be of interest to those involved in liability insurance and to lawyers concerned with this area. Inevitably legal terms and expressions are used. The object of this introduction is to explain the general legal position in lay terms since product liability law does not exist in a vacuum but is part of the whole legal framework.
Broadly speaking, a producer or supplier may be liable to a person for injury or damage suffered by that person by reason of a defective product under one of the following three headings:
(a) Negligence;
(b) Breach of contract;
(c) Breach of statute.
