     Summary

The current study on ‘Distribution Functions in General Insurance and the Role of Intermediaries’ is thus an attempt to look at the organic world of marketing concepts and functions, distribution channels and the role and effectiveness of general insurance intermediaries in India, both in the light of systems already evolved in some of the developed countries, and according to current perceptions of insurance officials in India. This report owes its genesis to a researcher’s approach where one is more than usually obliged to strip thoughts down to first principles and then to reassemble them with a view to explaining to work and its significance in a language which others will understand. It is therefore, essential, besides coming to grips with the Present scenario in India, to know what preceded in other overseas markets and what are the likely futuristic projections. Part one of the study thus lays down the theoretical/conceptual framework which endeavours to conform to the above aspects and ideas. Part two of the study is devoted to examining the scenario in the Indian context, based on a study of current practices and norms and through sifting of set of statistics, besides evaluating the interview findings conducted with insurance officials at Bombay and Aurangabad. Part there deals with recommendations and possible models evolved in the light of background material given in Part one and current Indian scenario as detailed in Part two.
