     Summary

The present text is not directed to the initiated but to students of Insurance and Shipping who may have to absorb something of the subject without making a lifetime study. In that respect the objective of the present pages is strictly limited. Controversial problems – past and present – and reference to legal decisions are avoided. Should enough interest be aroused the reader is referred to the many editions of Lowndes & Rudolf which provide a complete guide to the subject including a Table of Law Cases and Bibliography. ‘Lowndes’ is published in the British Maritime Law series and is, of course, the authoritative text book used by practicing Adjusters and the Courts. For present purposes it has been deemed sufficient to keep within the bounds of the York-Antwerp Rules 1974 as these Rules are so widely accepted internationally that the use of other codes of adjustment would be so exceptional as to demand special consideration. The contents of the book includes – Chapter 1 – Who or what is general average? Chapter 2 – General Average and Contracts of Affreightment Chapter 3 – Words and Phrases in common usage Chapter 4 – Text and brief comments on the York-Antwerp Rules 1974 Chapter 5 – Application to Insurance
