Summary |
This is an important book. Its importance derives from both its timing and its contents. We are, I believe, at the beginning of a period where significant new research into the practice of management is essential. The academic journals, the business press, and the popular media have all recently speculated on the managerial causes of weak competitive performance by American enterprise. Top managements, the business schools that train them, and the consultants who advise them have all been faulted for a destructive preoccupation with analytical technique- too narrow in its conception and too short term in its application. The United States securities markets have also been cited as an institution that reinforces and accentuates these preoccupations.
