     Summary

The primary purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a good working knowledge of the design and administration of pension schemes as arranged and administered by life assurance companies, although self-administered schemes also receive attention. This book builds upon part of the contents of the volume entitled pensions and related benefits and, together with the books entitled financial aspects of pensions business and pension law and taxation (all of which are published by the CII), provide a sound basis for a full appreciation of the theory and practice of pensions. It should never be forgotten, however, that the purpose of any employee benefit scheme is to assist the scheme member or his dependants at the appropriate time even if scheme death benefit is linked in the mind with the unthinkable and retirement benefit with old age.
