     Summary

The study falls naturally into two areas of investigation: Part A - The Current Position What data are Collected? In what form are data held? Whether data are analysed and with what frequency? What inferences are drawn? Using what techniques/methods of analysis? The organization of personal lines business in the U.K. usually separates Private Motor business from ‘Household’, the latter embracing Caravan and individual Personal Accident insurance also. Partly for this reason, and partly in recognition of the already much more extensive use of ‘statistics’ in relation to Private Motor business, separate sub-groups were formed to investigate the paths of progress in each of the two sectors. Part A of this report is therefore divided into four sections: Section 1: The development in influence of statistical techniques generally throughout the market for private lines insurances Section 2: The Private Motor market Section 3: The Household market Section 4: Overall conclusions concerning the current position Part B – The Future What could we do? What ought we to do? What benefits could be obtained?
