     Summary

The study of life assurance is a fascinating but somewhat complicated occupation. If such a study is to be profitable to the student and not merely a gathering together of unassimilated information or cumbersome masses of unrelated facts, the principles upon which the whole structure is based must be understood and absorbed These principles are the fundamental or basic ideas which underlie the modern practice of the life assurance offices, and it is from these first principles that the subsequent ideas encountered in the business have been developed. It is impossible to separate principles from practice, for practice is a natural translation of the principles already established. Whilst, therefore, the study of life assurance must first be devoted to understanding the principles on which it is established, we must next translate our theory into practice.
