The Fact Book data refer, generally, to the United States business of all life companies operating in this country, or to the total domestic and foreign business of U.S. life companies. Statistics on legal reserve life insurance issued by fraternal benefit societies operating in the U.S. and Canada are not included in these aggregates, but appear on pages 99 and 100 of this Fact Book.
Some insurance companies, through parent corporations or by ownership of subsidiaries, engage in other financial services, such as mutual funds. The Fact Book includes descriptive information on these services, but the statistics reflect only insurance operations.
The Fact Book data are made possible through the cooperation of life companies which provide information from their annual statements and through surveys conducted by the institute. The assistance provided by commercial publishers of life insurance statistics, government agencies and other life insurance organizations is invaluable and appreciated.
