     Summary

The book is aimed primarily at those doctors and physicians who wish to learn something about the principles of medical selection; the various steps to be taken in risk evaluation are described, as are the methods of rating substandard lives and the pricing of their premiums. It is hoped that an interest in life insurance medicine will thereby be stimulated, enabling doctors to apply their clinical skills to the production of medical reports which will be of the greatest value to life underwriters. It is hoped, too, that the book will be of value to chief medical officers and medical directors as a source of reference; to those physicians with lesser experience of the subject who may be asked to deputize from time to time on underwriting committees; to students of life insurance as an introduction to medical impairments and their significance; to medical officers of pension board who have responsibility for determining and advising on the amount of capital sums or pensions to be paid to impaired live; to personnel managements of industrial companies, banks and other institutions who require certain standards of health in applicants for employment, and to clinicians who sometimes require more detailed information about the late prognosis of certain diseases and conditions than is generally available in standard textbooks.
