The present volume by Dr. H. Wayne snider presents the findings of a study of the other broad category of real estate ownership-commercial real estate-and was conceived as a companion volume to the Schultz work. It is based on an analysis of 1,231 parcels of commercial real estate owned by twenty life insurance companies and acquired at a cost of over $800 million. The sample was examined to determine the manner in which the parcels were acquired, the types of property purchased, and the net rate of return obtained. Careful attention was also given to lease provisions, especially the nature of the options accorded the lessee. The twenty companies whose holdings formed the basis of the investigation account for more than 80 per cent of the commercial real estate owned by life insurance companies.
