     Summary

The scope of the book is limited to single life contingencies, together with the application of these probabilities in combination with the theory of interest. The notation used, that of standard actuarial publications, allows the student to continue without interruption with the study of more advanced topics after completing the material contained herein. The general scheme of the book is to provide some elasticity in the time required to cover the material. This is accomplished by the inclusion of many applied problems that should be solved by the student when a complete course is desired. For a shorter survey course many problems may be omitted. Several hundred odd exercises are included with answers. The majority of these require little or no numerical work in their solution. The tables, which are appended, while not entirely complete, are more extensive than those usually included in books of this character and afford greater accuracy than most published books of tables.
